The 22-year-old left hander is now signed with the Giants through his remaining arbitration eligible years and one free agent year (as well as two free agent years for the club options).
According to MLBtraderumors.com, the guaranteed portion of today’s deal is estimated around $28 to $31 million.
The Giants now have Bumgarner, Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain for two years following this season (with Cain and Bumgarner together on the Giants for the next five years). I give this move two thumbs up (and I’d give more if, ya know, I had more thumbs…), as the Giants youngest pitcher – who happens to have all-star potential – on their staff for half a decade.
Its obvious the Giants like their pitching and want the same core group mentioned earlier to stick around as long as possible.
I picked Bumgarner to win the N.L. Cy Young award this season, so signing him for that long when he is still young with loads of potential is the right move from the Giants front office.
Kudos to you Brian Sabean and Larry Baer. And more kudos to you Bumgarner for not making us wait like Cain and Lincecum. We never worried about you.
