The 33-year-old left-hander has spent his last four seasons with the Giants, winning two World Series championships and holding a career-best 2.73 ERA throughout his tenure with the team. Last season, in 63 innings he posted a 2.70 ERA and 8.1 K/9.
His postseason numbers are even more impressive.
In 14 1/3 innings pitched in the playoffs with the Giants in both 2010 and 2012, Affeldt has kept a 1.26 ERA with a .125 batting average against.
Although Affeldt has had a few freak accidents to prevent him from pitching (cutting his hand at a family BBQ), he has proven he is worthy of a big contract. Let’s face it, he has been the backbone of this team’s bullpen and is a very valuable pitcher for the Giants.
I know there was a big freak out about his previous one-year contract after 2011 that cost the Giants $5 million, but I believe he is worth every penny.
